Set-Up:
- Sunday afternoon set-up:
- Box will be in STM Family Center closet or in designated camp storage area. You will either need to bake cookies at home the night before or get to camp early on the first day to bake cookies and let them cool so the 1st group will have some to package while theirs are baking.
- All other fresh supplies should be in the kitchen
- Adult volunteer may assist with set up and cookie baking.
- Daily set-up:
- Pre-heat ovens to 350 degrees and turn down air conditioning every morning before class. 30 minutes prior to each group, remove butter from refrigerator and allow to soften.
- Set up one mixing bowl per table with the following items: a package of cookie mix, one stick of butter, one spatula for mixing, 3-4 plastic spoons (one per camper), and Dixie cup with about one tablespoon of sprinkles.
- Prepare eggs for easier pouring by cracking an egg into a Dixie cup (one per table). Keep cup-filled eggs off of the tables until it’s time to add them to the dough, to prevent spills.
- Prepare cookie sheets with parchment paper for placing cookies on once dough is made. One per table.
- Prepare card stock by cutting each page into 1/8ths.
- Set up 3 tables for cookie making – 3-4 kids at each table; and one table for bagging station with already baked cookies (for them when they finish bagging) and Ziploc bags
Activity Steps:
- Campers need to wash hands, then divide campers into groups of 3-4.
- Lead them through cookie directions, having campers take turns adding the ingredients, mixing the dough, and forming cookies. (one adds cookie mix, one adds butter, one pours egg, one pours sprinkles, they all take turns mixing and forming balls of dough).
- Our one package of cookie mix into bow. Add softened butter and egg, and stir until week blended. Mix in the sprinkles.
- Show campers an example of the correct size each cookie dough ball should be (about one inch in diameter).
- Campers will shape/roll cookies and place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
- As soon as the kids finish putting the cookies on the cookie sheets, adult will put them in the oven immediately because they have to bake and cool so that the next group will be able to bag them.
- Have kids wash hands once again. While they are washing, prepare tables for decorating cards with card stock and markers.
- Direct campers to the decorating station/table to make their cards/note (1 or 2 each).
- Allow campers to eat one cookie, and then they may bag the cookies.
- Direct campers to the bagging table/station and add 2 cookies/bag. They will all make 1 or 2 bags of cookies.
- Campers will bag previously baked cookies from the last group.
- If time allows, play Chef Relay Game.
- Divide group into 2 teams (5-6 each team). Have each team split to 2 different sides of room, and line up, facing each other. First person in line puts on: two oven mitts, apron, and a chef’s hat; the walks across room to next team member, while balancing a plastic cupcake/item on their head. If item falls off head, they go back and start over walking. The next person repeats. The first team to have all members complete wins.

Discussion:
Hi campers, welcome to the Cookie Making Station!
How many of you like fresh baked cookies? Doesn’t it make you feel special when someone makes them for you? Yes! That’s why we’re going to be making some cookies that will go out and get delivered on the MLF truck that serves the poor and the homeless. Because we want to help make them feel special. We’re also going to make cards to go with the cookies, so we can make them smile, or brighten up their day.
So, at this camp we’re talking about serving food and kindness to ALL people, no matter what the color of their skin is, or how much money they have, or what clothes they’re wearing. The people receiving the cookies we are making might be white, or black, they might be male or female, and they might be adults who live alone, or families that have children. They are just like us, except, usually they don’t have very much money or a job or house. But God loves them just the same as he loves us. They’ve just had different circumstances in their lives.
See, people are kind of like cookies. When you bake cookies you use the same types of ingredients but your cookies usually all turn out just a little bit different, from each other. They are special, and unique. They can be small or big, and different shapes, but they are all made the same way. That’s just like us…because we are all made the same by God on the inside, but we each look different on the outside.
Let’s look at one of the ingredients we are using. What do you see here? (Hold up a brown and white egg) Let kids answer. Point out that on the outside, one egg is brown and one is white. Let’s see what happens when we crack it. (Crack the eggs in separate Dixie cups and show it to them) Do they look different on the inside? No! Isn’t that cool? We should all be proud of our differences and know that is what makes us so special.
