Procedures for Administering First Aid

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS
Camp policy does not allow the administration of routine prescription medications by any Camp Director, Camp Staff Member or Camp Volunteer.

All emergency prescription medications (i.e. EpiPen) will be kept in the group leader’s backpack, and returned to the parent at the end of the camp week by the Camp Director. Medication must be provided in the original container showing the patient’s name, prescription number, date filled, physician’s name, name of medication and direction for use.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID (severe difficulty breathing, seizure, broken bone, etc.)
  • Activate EMS – Call or have someone call 911.
    • Be prepared to provide address and exact location on church campus.
    • Send responsible adult or older teen to flag down emergency personnel.
  • Inform Camp Director and Team Leader.
    • Camp Director will coordinate all emergency assistance activities.
      • If camper has EpiPen or other emergency medication in Group Leader backpack and requests to use it, Camp Director will verify that medication belongs to camper, and will provide it to camper for self-administration.
        • If camper cannot self-administer the EpiPen or emergency medication and the Camp Director determines that medication is required, the Camp Director or designated Camp Staff Member may administer the EpiPen or emergency medication.
    • Camp Director or designated Camp Staff Member will contact parent/guardian or emergency contact person, and will inform them of the situation.
    • When emergency is resolved, Camp Director will enter report into Camp Medical Log.
  • Remain with camper until assistance arrives.
  • Assist in moving other campers away from the emergency situation.

NON-EMERGENCY FIRST AID (minor cuts & scrapes, bug bites, etc.)

  • Assess camper health, and determine if first aid is required. If assistance is desired in administering first aid, contact Camp Director.
  • Treat camper with appropriate care:
    • Wash / disinfect area or wound.
    • Apply adhesive bandage (in group backpack).
    • Apply ice pack, if needed (you can make one in the kitchen.)
    • Additional first aid supplies are available at the camp front desk and generally in several locations around campus (i.e. kitchen areas.)
  • Provide explanation of treatment to parent/guardian at the end of the camp day.
  • At Camp Director discretion, minor first aid report may be entered into Camp Medical Log.
